Two places are better than
Saturday, January 17th, 2009There’s something distinctly liminal about Byron’s choice of place. It made me think of a line from Roy Fisher’s City. Tilt your head over to the right to see what I mean.
Denise Levertov said of Fisher’s City “he is not painting its portrait but exploring its moral significance, and through it, himself (And through himself, all men).”
From our first conversation Byron’s opinions around the differing moralities of these locations will certainly make interesting reading soon enough.
But for now I wonder how the different ideas around liminality might offer new perspectives to Byron’s exploration, here’s a quick link to wikipedia that made me begin to think.

Hi Andy, I love the concept of Liminality. Parts of the poem I’m working on already explore a sort of existential hinterland so I think we’re definitely on the same page. I’m going to do some more research on the subject as even the stuff on Wikipedia has my synapses crackling.
Cheers.

I’ve just scribbled down this new word, thanks! It’s a good time of year for this state…. a friend was talking about the ‘void’ of January for many of us before the year takes shape…. then I read that the moon was void today as a time of transition – i.e. while USA begins a whole new era. Shame Barack didn’t squeeze the word into his noble speech – that would’ve been synchronicity:)

Looking across the residencies, interesting that Rukus is also in the liminal land, between the Birmingham and Derby identity. And Emma, talking to homeless people in a different liminal place. Those teenagers in Derby presumably are trying to postcode their way out of liminality while also, according to wikipedia they are liminal owing to their position in age. It’s fascinating – thanks for the link. Loads to think about there.
