GREYhaven, sleeping with the lights on and abandoned shoes.

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Hello,

is the whole of Britain snowed in apart from Whitehaven? Ha ha WHITEhaven, there’s not a flake in the sky, on the sea or the ground! There was a quick flurry and a pathetic half inch on Monday night but now it’s definately Greyhaven.

I’m exhausted! sofa surfing is not like going on safari and having an interesting place to stay every night and I’m not even half way there yet. I’m hoping to be at my mate Lisa’s tonight although I haven’t asked her so i’ll keep you posted. She too has a small baby so I hope she doesn’t think I’ll scare him like one of my intended beds for the night said! (see previous blog)

Spent last night at my grandparents’ house which was stange as it was familliar as a palce I grew up but different because everybody is so much older and my granda is really poorly. The night before that I was at a mate’s who owns a very large husky who I had to wrestle into his cage in the morning as I tiptoed around somebody else’s house (he’d gone to work) feeling like I really shouldn’t be there. I’m getting to understand that places and spaces change massively depending on who is the room with you, what energy they bring and even the change of having the TV or a light on ( I slept with the light on last night as I firmly believe my grandparents’ house to be haunted).

I’ve also been listening to the recordings I made from the young persons’ hostel ( will be uploading soon) and trying to understand what it is that makes people feel like a palce is home – some think of it as being the four walls or  a palce that contains memories, others  think it’s more about the people you’re with. I have a recording of guy playing guitar and he suddenly  went into the House of the Rising Sun, so I may do something with that.

I’ve also been on a little jaunt to the beach to see what gets washed up – displaced by the tide, not quite as exotic as what my mentor Annamaria found the on the South coast but interesting:

A Milk carton from the Isle of Man, a deflated orange party balloon, a knot of colourful rope, a Dolce&Gabanna slipper!!  shells, stones, lots of drift wood and an addidas trainer, are people walking barefooted on water or something – why are there so many lost shoes on Briatin’s beaches? I think this could be a project on its own.

Okay I’m gonna be brave and try and upload some stuff…….

It’s pretty grey in Barrow too but still loads of snow on the hills and mountains around Kendal.

You do right to sleep with the light on. I find if I’m feeling a bit emotional it’s more important to see the place around me. If I recognise objects and I feel safe and I’m more likely to feel grounded in the here and now. If I’m not in a safe place I’m more likely to think about the past or the future and get caught up in the past or the unreal. Reality is a great place to be. Catch ya soon xx
