Writers Shaping Places – London Event 30 June 6.30-8.00pm

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

‘A sense of place and community is central to my own creative writing. I’ve found having the opportunity to work with redevelopment professionals as well as local people has been inspiring, thought provoking and deeply rewarding. It’s also reminded me of just what a powerful tool creative writing can be for myself and others.’
Aoife Mannix

I wanted to let you all know about an event I am organising in London on Tuesday 30th June. It poses the question: How do writers work with architects, designers and planners to explore and interpret people’s relationship with and aspirations for a particular place? There are more details below – it would be great to see some of you there.

Tuesday 30th June
Shortwave, 10 Bermondsey Square, London, SE1 3UN
6.30 – 8.00pm followed by networking

Join writer Chris Meade, UrbanWords Director Sarah Butler and architect Kate Cheyne, at Shortwave, a new cinema, cafe bar and production facility within the Bermondsey Square regeneration scheme, for an evening of ideas, discussion and the opportunity to network.

This event will also launch a new web piece by Chris Meade, sharing his experiences working with artists/designers Snug and Outdoor, and the conversation will be continued online after the event.

An opportunity for writers who teach or run community projects to explore new ways of working, and for regeneration professionals to see how writers can add value to their work.

Hi Sarah, how are you? Good to have you blogging here too:) I’d love to be at this event, but am already working that night so will have to miss it. I’ll look it up online afterwards though and see if it’s anything like our indigitalisation skype chat from the other week… like spinning class for your brain keeping up with so many people typing in on one conversation:)
I meant to comment on your last blog as well….firstly I loved the question you posed about what effect our presence has on a place we’re in residence in, and do we leave anything changed there? Enlightening thought for me, as I’d been consciously trying to keep a low profile and be almost invisible to get a sense of the place and not get in the way. Now I’ll give that some consideration too, and what ripples I’d like to leave (not just the chocolate ones…)
I also noted your comment about keeping blogs fairly brief – I’m guilty of failing on that and realised I almost feel obliged to type more to make it look like I’ve done some proper writing! And friends will know from my voicemail that I don’t keep that brief and can waffle on for a good few minutes if they don’t pick up the phone.(perhaps that’s why they just take my calls instead, it’s quicker!) I’ll try and edit a bit as I type in future. Thanx.

    Hi Charlie,
I’ll be interested to hear about those ripples!
I know what you mean about feeling you have to write a lot almost to justify yourself, but I think writing on the web is read differently (maybe with less attention?) than writing on the page, so I reckon short and snappy probably has more impact, though for a ‘discursive’ site like this, perhaps not.
It would be great if you (and others!) would go onto the online discussion after the event on 30th June. It’s a ning, so you’ll know what you’re doing! And should be a bit calmer than that skype chat. I’ll post more details about that once it’s up and running.
Great to see you (and hear you!) at Lit Up – I’m about to write a blog post about that now…..

Good to see you too, and hope you got to enjoy a bit of Kendal on the friday – we found some amazing cake places:)let me know the ning address for the after event discussion and I’ll go online after the event – although I’m doing some breakfast shows that week which means 4am alarm calls, so it won’t be the same night of the event I log on, as I’ll be crawling under the duvet when I get home! See you soon, and hope you take part in a slam next time, go on:)

Hm. This looks really good. Thankfully I’ll be in London by then and will definitely try and make it down. Anything to do with architecture is hot in my book.
