Connecting with my Mentor
Thursday, December 4th, 2008“Yeaah!!! boooyy”… (in a Flava Flav style..lol) Just a short one really.. I have now been assigned a mentor well.. actually it was a few weeks ago….lol and I am paired with Angie Bual, the producer from the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith …. and I am really happy with that…. to be honest I wouldn’t have minded anyone of the mentors having spoke to most of them…. but I had two in my mind that I felt best ’suited’ my vision and what I was doing….. erm!! and Angie was one so thanks!!!. I’m in the Mids and she is in London… (soon to be moving further afield) so face-to-face won’t always be easy… and ‘randomly’ poping in won’t be an option..lol THANKS to technology we can still connect via phone, email.. etc…. (Nb: Dom I’m still not ‘SKyped up’ will be getting on that this weekend… soz mate)
We had our first chat about the project and after saying hello…. well I ‘kinda’ just went into this 10 min ’speed talk’ about what I’m doing? asking how should I do it.. third person, first person? should I tell a story?… Do I need characters? should I be myself?…. lets just say it may have been a ‘baptism of fire’ for Angie… SORRY Angie ……. after a moment to catch my breath…. and Angie to ’soak it all in’…….. we ended saying that we will meet face -to-face in the next couple of weeks or early Jan and that I would get my key dates etc … to her. I hope she doesn’t think I’m a bit of a ‘looney’……….. maybe I am.. ummmmm!!! one gone yazeemi

WHATS IT ALL ABOUT… LAD!!!
Monday, December 1st, 2008Hello once again… been abit of a mad one… changed my password.. forgot it… had to reset it… etc…. technology Hey!!!… ermmm! Where do I begin…so I have started my residency in a local secondary school…. (more on that later)
My piece is called (subject to change) “POSTCODE PURGATORY” within many areas of Britain there are wars being fought by youth.. in the ‘real sense’, lives being lost. Unseen boundaries are being created over something as simple as a postcode. These few characters that you are given when you live in an area within the two parts of the midllands I have lived in….. are not taken ‘lightly’……. “You ain’t welcomed in myplace because I could be caught dead if I’m in yours…..” But WHY?
Sometimes I make the mistake of looking at myself as still a ‘youth’ yep!! i’m a young man… but… I ain’t what some will consider ” a young yute”…… I think that word leaves as you say bye to 29… even though I forget sometimes…… Point being I wanted to FIND OUT what ‘today’s youth’…lol see as their “sense of place” what do they think of their area?…. are they proud of their area?…… is the postcode really that important?
From before I was born there has always been bits of tension between rival towns… football and football fans spring to mind as I mention this…. but I feel this is a little different or IS IT? In BIRMINGHAM (where I’m from) the postcode ‘drama’ has evolved and matured alot more than in DERBY where I live now, so my transition from living in Birmingham to now living in Derby lets me see the situation slightly more clearly like ‘what it can become’ and ‘where it is leading to’.
My Residency will consists of schools/youth clubs/streets. I have started already and will be posting up seperate blogs about them.. and speak about the info gathered and the inspiration taken!!! 1gone yazeemi
